The German Federal Foreign Office in a press release on Thursday, distributed by the German Embassy in Skopje, welcomes the decision of President Gjorge Ivanov to award the mandate on government formation all the while calling his remarks about the German Ambassador ‘inappropriate’.
“We are delighted that after a long deliberation President Ivanov has made the right decision and has given up the blockade. Accusations against German diplomats and other friendly states are inappropriate. It is a known fact that assessments, handed over to the host country, are always prepared in close consultation between the Federal Foreign Office and the Embassy itself,” read the press release issued today.
Germany’s Ambassador to Macedonia, Christine Althauser said Thursday at an event that she fostered normal professional relations with President Gjorge Ivanov, a day after he said that the Embassy had been sending fake reports to Berlin.
In an interview on Wednesday evening, President Ivanov was speaking about the influence of the diplomatic corps on political developments in Macedonia.
“We need to be concerned about the quality of some of the diplomats that serve in Macedonia”, President Ivanov said. He specifically mentioned the German Embassy, saying that it was delivering fake reports to Chancellor Angela Merkel and that the work of the Embassy was an insult to Macedonia.
Prior to it, Ivanov has stated western ambassadors to Macedonia are not just of lower quality, but they behave more as NGO activists than diplomats.
