Dojran lake reaches highest water levels ever

Water in Dojran Lake has reached the highest level in the last 60 years, says lake’s supervisor Zlate Taleski.

According to him, in the last days the water level is 242 centimeters above the minimum elevation.

Such water level in the lake is recorded only in 1958, when the current level was achieved, but since yesterday we’ve already seen a gradual increase – says Taleski.

– The lake’s water level was at the lowest elevation in the 1990s, and then it began to resover slowly but surely. In the period when Dojran Lake was at the lowest levels – three meters below its normal, with the current water level, we have a total increase in the water level of almost six meters, said Taleski.

Otherwise, in the 1990s, the Dojran Lake experienced an ecological catastrophe with a sudden discharge of water on the Greek side of the lake. In September 2002, a rescue water system was implemented on the Macedonian side of the lake, which flows into the lake several hundred liters of water per second.

Apart from the system of filling of the lake, the favorable hydrological conditions, accompanied by frequent rainfall and snow, have helped further for the lake to make a strong comeback.
