Dojran municipality holds Sunday a referendum over continuation of operations of mine “Kazandol” at the territory of neighboring municipality Valandovo and the opening of other mines in Dojran municipality.
A total of 2,747 people are eligible to vote at eight polling stations, with fifty percent plus one required for the referendum to be considered valid.
The Dojran referendum was scheduled at the citizens’ request who fear that mine Kazandol, but also the potential opening of a mine at Belasica mountain, would pose an environmental threat to the area’s agriculture, tourism and Lake Dojran.
Dojran is the third municipality in southeast Macedonia to hold a referendum on the mine issue. People in Gevgelija and Bogdanci voted against the opening of mines at the territory of their municipalities.
Valandovo is set to hold a referendum on the Kazandol mine on August 20.
