Ivanov: Zaev manipulates, Bilateral agreements can’t end with changes to Macedonian constitution

The Cabinet of the President of the Republic of Macedonia, Gjorge Ivanov, assessed that yesterday’s statement by SDS leader Zoran Zaev, given in a TV interview that the possible rejection of the agreement with Greece would jeopardize the perspectives of the Republic of Macedonia for joining the EU and NATO and increased internal dangers is a desperate attempt to manipulate the public and public opinion and instigate Macedonian citizens in the wake of a possible referendum vote.

– The strategic commitments of the Republic of Macedonia for membership in the European Union and NATO are clearly defined and unchanged. Preserving the constitutional name and finding a solution that will not cause constitutional changes is in no way directed against the integration of the Republic of Macedonia into the European Union and NATO. The conclusion of an international agreement contained in one or more interlinked documents should be in accordance with the Constitution of the Republic of Macedonia, and not foresee its amendment, says the statement sent by the Cabinet of the President of the Republic of Macedonia.

– President Ivanov believes that name negotiations are too important for them not to be taken seriously and are led in a irresponsible manner. These issues and imposed technical requirements are now allegedly resolved by telephone and through a personal agreement between Zaev and Tsipras without consulting neither the opposition or the general public. A national consensus is a must on this issue – the statement said.
